Q1. What happened to Brookfield during World
War I?
Ans. In 1915, military camps
were established near Brookfield. The soldiers were using the playing field for sports and training. Most
of the younger masters either left
the school or joined the army. Brookfield had also been turned into O.T.C (Officer Training Camp).
Q2. What did Chatteris read in the
Church?
Ans. Chatteris was the new
headmaster of Brookfield. On every Sunday night, Chatteris read out the
names of the old boys killed in the
war. He also read their biographies.
This site was full of grief.
Q3. How and when did Chatteris die?
Ans. Chatteris was suffering from diabetes.
He fell ill during the winter of 1917 and died. His death was a great shock for Mr. Chips.
Q4. Why did Mr. Chips join Brookfield
school again?
Chatteris
met Chips at Mrs. Wickett's house. He told Chips about the condition of the School.
He told him that many young teachers
had joined the army. Chips was an experienced
teacher. So, he requested Chips
to join the school again.
Q5. Why did Chatteris look worried?
During the war,
Chatteris was thirty-nine years of age. Many young teachers left the school. He
had diabetes. Due to overworking and
illness, he looked much worried.
Q6. Who was Forrester?
Ans. Forrester was the smallest
new boy Brookfield had ever had. He was about four feet high above his muddy football boots. He was killed in 1918, shot down in flames over Cambria.
