Chapter 3: Good-Bye, Mr. Chips

Mrs. Wickett had been in charge of the linen-room at Brookfield. She was also the landlady of Mr. Chips. She rented a room to Mr. Chips after he retired from school.

Mr. Chips lived a quiet and peaceful life at Mrs. Wickett's. He had his quiet enjoyments and his past. He had no worries.

The room which Mrs. Wickett gave to Chips was small but very comfortable and sunny. Chips felt much convenient because his room was near Brookfield.

Mr. Chips' room was furnished simply and with school-masterly taste. There were a few bookshelves and sporting trophies in his room. Mr. Chips enjoyed reading almost all kinds of books he had in his room.

Mr. Chips lived a peaceful life at Mrs. Wickett's. He lived a fairly active life. He drank tea, received callers, and wrote his occasional letters. He invited new masters to tea, as well as new boys.

Mr. Chips had a sound financial position. His pension was adequate. He could afford everything and anything he wanted. He had no financial worries.

Collingwood was the student of Chips who was punished by Chips for climbing on to the gymnasium roof to get a ball out of a gutter. He was killed in Egypt during the war.
