Chapter 5: Good-Bye, Mr. Chips
Q1. Why did Katherine like
Mr. Chips? What did Katherine think of Chips' profession?
Katherine thought
that school mastering was a very different
and important profession. According to her, a schoolmaster influences those who are going to matter to the world. Chips, however, did not think of it like that.
Q2. How did Mr. Chips
depreciate himself before his marriage?
Mr. Chips depreciated himself before Katherine,
by telling her about his mediocre
degree, his difficulties in discipline, the certainty of no promotion, and
his ineligibility to marry a young and ambitious girl.
Q3. How
greatly was Mr. Chips changed after his marriage?
Mr. Chips married with Katherine Bridges in London in 1896 when he was fifty. His marriage
brought many good changes in his life. He became disciplined, affectionate and good fellow. His wife made him a new
man. On the whole, his marriage was successful.
