shells began instantly. Later, they learned that five bombs had fallen in and around Brookfield. Nine persons had been killed.

Burrow, the pale, lean, and medically unfit science
master was nicknamed stink merchant. Chips regarded scientists as stink
merchants because they invent new kinds of
mischief (bombs) in their laboratory.

11, 1918. The day was celebrated as Armistice Day. A holiday was decreed. Chips also resigned on the same day.

was a damp and foggy day. Chips got
a chill as he walked across the quadrangle to the dining hall. He had bronchitis and he remained in bed till
after Christmas. Mr. Chips also tendered his resignation the same day.
